OUR STORY

The Need to Reimagine

“We hear echoes of the past amid the noise of the future.”

The story of México Reimaginado began long before the project itself took shape.

It began with a question that still guides us:

What do we do with what we inherit?

We live surrounded by songs that feel as though they have always been with us. We hear them at celebrations, in the streets, in our grandparents’ voices, and throughout community festivities. They may seem to belong to the past, yet they remain woven into our everyday lives.

Over time, we came to understand that these songs were not finished works, but open-ended conversations. Each generation interprets them through the lens of its own time, weaves in new influences, and discovers different questions within them. Tradition has never stood still; it has always found new ways to remain alive.

That realization transformed the way we listened.

We stopped asking how to preserve these songs exactly as we had inherited them and began asking how they might sound if they were still being written today.

México Reimaginado was born from that question.

Since 2023, we have been developing a multidisciplinary performance project that brings together artistic research, musical creation, and interdisciplinary expression to explore the contemporary possibilities of Mexico’s traditional songbook.

Each piece begins with a shared heritage and opens a dialogue with the present. Through this process, songs deeply rooted in Mexico’s cultural imagination—such as La Bamba, La Bruja, La Llorona, El Cascabel, El Barzón, and Arriba Pichátaro—find new paths without losing what has kept them alive: their ability to continue speaking to us.

Our Origins

México Reimaginado brings together musicians based in Colima, united by a shared impulse: to explore tradition as a space for creation, not preservation alone.

It soon became clear that music did not travel alone.

Each new question led us toward other forms of expression. Literature entered into dialogue with our concerts; dance transformed the way we inhabited the stage; documentary research deepened our understanding of cultural heritage; and visual design and improvisation became natural extensions of the same creative process.

What began as a musical ensemble evolved into a creative space where tradition, imagination, and the present coexist.

A decisive moment in this journey came when we were selected to receive support from the Programa de Estímulo a la Creación y Desarrollo Artístico (PECDA), a cultural grant program of the Government of the State of Colima. That support gave us the time and freedom to deepen our interdisciplinary exploration.

We came to understand that our work was not simply to perform songs, but to create experiences that invite others to encounter tradition from new perspectives.

Our purpose became clear: to build bridges between Mexican tradition and contemporary imagination.
